“It’s important to ground them in reality and not make them superheroes,” says Chris Pratt on playing a Navy SEAL in The Terminal List

Chris Pratt is all set to portray a Navy SEAL in the upcoming Amazon Original Series, The Terminal List. It’s not his first stint as one as Pratt was seen as a SEAL in the 2013 film Zero Dark Thirty, where he played one of the SEALs who helped kill Osama Bin Laden. The actor believes that action films over time have turned Navy SEALs into superheroes and he wanted a layer of authenticity in the show that many Hollywood productions featuring special ops don’t have. He explained, “Action films over time have turned Navy SEALs into superheroes. I think when actual SEALs watch that stuff; they’re like, ‘Nah, that’s Hollywood’”.

Talking about bringing the ‘layer of authenticity’, Chris said that it is important not to embarrass the SEALS. He said, “I have an affinity for this community and have gotten to spend a lot of time with these folks and develop strong bonds with people who are part of that brotherhood. So that was important just in terms of authenticity and making sure that we don’t embarrass ourselves or embarrass them or that we make them proud. We wanted that our friends who are in the SEAL watch this, and say ‘good job.’”

Chris goes on to say that while portraying a SEAL, it is important to ground them into reality. “It’s definitely different playing one of these characters than, say, like, your typical kind of superhero character, because what makes these men so particularly special is their mortality. They step into these fights knowing they can die. They don’t do it because they have a bulletproof vest, and they’re faster than speeding bullets, faster than a locomotive or whatever. These are guys who have each other’s backs and who routinely sacrifice their lives in the line of duty. And so, playing that, it’s important to ground them in reality and not make them superheroes.”

To make sure that the actors reflect authenticity on screen, Pratt enlisted former special ops as technical advisors. Pratt said, “The goal was “to try to honour that community and make this for that community, so they’d watch us and go, ‘Wow. That’s actually very accurate.” It makes sense to enlist former military personnel to work on Hollywood productions as they wake up and look for work to get done,” he said.
